Studio Sets

VIDCON Booth

The MTV talent pool has grown to include influencers and content creators. So of course we wanted a memorable booth activation at VIDCON that talent would remember. The social team had an idea for a bathroom set up that talent could take photos and videos in. This was a fun idea that let people create little storylines and interact with props inside the bathroom environment. I worked with my creative director and the set design agency to create a unique bathroom that ended up being a hit at Vidcon.

Studio Space Design

While most of the sets that are built for our digital shows are made for 1-2 day shoots and then disassembled, there was an idea to create a permanent studio space in LA. This space would act as a hub for celebs and influencers to come in and shoot quick videos. I was tasked with working with my creative director and a set director to create four different sets based around different show creative. The studio space was split into four areas and based off the creative, I pulled inspo / provided mockups to the set designer. Once the rough ideas were passed to the set designer, the creative director and I stayed in constant communication with the set designer and provided feedback and ideas on comps and helped concept the areas that would provide a fun, functional, and most importantly visually compelling spaces to shoot in that stayed within the MTV brand.

Once the studio was built and talent was being filmed it was time to create the video graphics packages. Using the set design as a jumping off point, I had the graphics packages work in tandem with the space. So keeping color palette, set elements, and set design in mind I built out the supporting graphics for the shows.

BASIC TO BOUGIE: YOU GOT SERVED

The Idea: The show is based off trying different items from a category ranged from cheapest to most expensive. This show was a departure from a previous digital show called Basic to Bougie. While that show leaned into the “bougieness” we wanted to lean into the kitschiness of the “basic” and low cost side. So the idea was to take a retro diner vibe that still felt modern.

GREATEST PARTY STORY

The Idea: This show is a remake of a previous franchise by the same name. The concept for this was straight forward we wanted a set that showed a party had just been had there. The idea for this set was grandma’s house vibe that was destroyed by a party the day before. The grandma vibe is shown as the overarching blue color and the party elements are incorporated as the pops of pink shown throughout.

CAN YOU PASS

The Idea: The idea for the show was a quiz show that placed talent back in the anxiety forming environment of taking a test. We wanted to reference school and testing without being on the nose. So we referenced tests, note taking and doodling that could be found in someones notebook. Through vivid colors, and black outlines we created an environment that felt flat and 2-dimensional but still had foreground, middle ground and background elements through color so it had dimension to it.

FLEXIBLE SPACE

The Idea: The idea for this space was a flexible space that wasn’t tied to a certain creative pitch. Talent could take selfies here, do quick interviews, and just play around with props. After bouncing ideas around we came up with the idea of a deconstructed MTV logo. So the moveable set pieces were sharp, angular and geometric and could be rearranged to create endless compositions.
