YouTube Dating Shows Graphics

 

Youtube Show Initiative

2018 showed a push for original MTV Youtube content. With all these new shows coming up unique graphics packages were needed for each series. So I was asked to create branded packages including show openers, lower thirds, and additional on-screen graphics.

The process started with receiving a one-sheet from a producer and I would create a semi-branded pitch deck for them. If the show was greenlit I would do a deeper dive into the branding. After working with the digital art director on concepts I would create mockups and work with animators and editors to create templatized show graphics to be used in the edit.

One of the focuses for our Youtube content was to explore the dating and game show space. We wanted to differentiate our graphics from other networks by being bold with color, have energetic animations that worked in tandem with the craziness on set but also have all the show graphics feel cohesive as a set.

Singled Out 2018 was a remake of the classic MTV show for the 90’s. I was tasked with creating an updated digital approach to the show’s graphics package. The only request was to keep the angel baby cupid that existed in the original show’s logo. I worked with an illustrator to create an emojified version of the angel.

The graphics package included a logo and show open, lower thirds, color palette, transitions, on-screen graphics, video graphics.

THE STYLEGUIDE

 

SET DESIGN

I worked with the set designer for set aesthetic and the creation of in-show props. We created frames for screens on-set, prop cards, game boards, and gave lighting suggestions that tied into the world we had created with graphics. The show came together and created a fun high energy set for the talent that hosted the show as well as the contestants that participated in their quest to find love!

SOCIAL MEDIA MARKETING CAMPAIGN

To push viewers to the youtube show we utilized MTV’s following on social platforms such as instagram and snapchat and created platform specific promos that tied into the show. I was asked by the social team to create a quiz about celebrity relationships. Users would play the quiz and the last slide would push to the MTV youtube channel. The quiz utilized the graphics package created and helped increase numbers. I also made keyart using the hosts and the iconic baby angel to be used for the youtube banner. This image was the first thing our audience saw when coming to the MTV channel and also drove traffic to the videos.

THE PROJECT

May The Best Twin Win is another original MTV Youtube dating show. The creative for the show is a single person is unsuspectingly set up on a date with identical twins. Through a series of challenges and questions the twins compete and the single must make a choice of which twin he’d like to go out with again. The vibe of the show was comedic, fun, and upbeat. We incorporated that into the vibe of the graphics package.

SHOW STYLEGUIDE

The graphics needed for this show were a logo, show open, lower thirds (that differed between twins and the single contestant) segment titles, game titles, on screen graphics for game questions, and explainer cards.

 

SET THOUGHTS

Mockup created for set designer to reference. I wanted a semi-monochromatic set that gradiated from a teal to a bright pink and had a pink shag rug. I also created in-show game cards by using the digital graphics already created.

Flex On My Ex & Lip Locked

As we solidified the look and feel of the youtube dating show space, I moved into the role of not only designing graphics but also art directing junior designers and animators to continue the branding of additional dating shows. I would kickoff the show with them, work on logo conception, graphic application and production design.

Lip Locked is a show involving a couple in which one of the partners is blind folded and kisses three contestants including their partner to see if they can guess who their partner is. For Flex On My Ex it was another dating show in which contestants try to woo a new single lover while the contestant’s exes sit behind them and reveal the truth about who they really are.
